Founder, S.V. Chapter - PEF
Maryam is a founding member of Silicon Valley’s chapter of the educational non-profit The Professional Education foundation, (PEF), operating in Pakistan since 2009, alleviating poverty and inequity through scholarships to the brightest and most needy university students attending public institutions in Pakistan. Students are often the first in their families to attend university; getting by through sheer intelligence, grit and passion for education and their belief that a degree will lift them and their families out of abject poverty.
Maryam has seen PEF grow from it’s founding in 2009 serving just 85 students to 1,300 in 2016, (10% of all students are orphans). The tertiary education provided is a fraction of the cost of a similar degree at a private college and PEF focuses on these public schools primarily because of this ROI. Currently there are 30 Universities being served by PEF in all provinces of Pakistan. The organization has graduated 273 students since 2009, adding doctors, engineers and scientist to Pakistan’s young talent pool.
Maryam has over 10 years of experience creating and building teams, initiating grassroots support for non-profit start-ups, fundraising, communicating and marketing. Her work has focused on child poverty, literacy, and the empowerment of women. Her experiences have given her a wealth of training and experience in program and project management, mobilizing volunteers, marketing, procurement, event organization and entrepreneurship. Her passion for education was sparked by her work with children and the elderly, during her years as an educator in Japan. Maryam holds a BSc Honors in Management and Economics from RHUL, University of London, UK.
In addition to her work with PEF, Maryam has boundless passion for culture and history; a travel enthusiast she has lived in 5 countries, and traveled extensively with the benefit of being able to speak several languages. She is an active member of her community, a PTA parent, and past Board member at Development in Literacy. She enjoys interior design, architecture, art and theater but her most enjoyable past-time is being a very hands-on parent to two active boys.
