Bilal is a Partner at Lux Capital, based in the firm’s Palo Alto office. Bilal partners with and invests in entrepreneurs working on transformative ideas in hardware, software, and data.
Bilal manages Lux’s investments in Evolv Technology (physical security), CyPhy Works (drones), LensBricks (computational imaging), Orbital Insight (ML/AI/data analytics), AirMap (airspace data), HappiestBaby (stealth), Noon (stealth), SuperHome (home services), CloudMedx (HCIT), AltSpace (virtual reality), Desktop Metal (3D printing), and Pinscreen (computer graphics).
Previously Bilal was an investor at General Catalyst Partners in Boston where he invested in companies like CyPhy Works, GridCo, SynapDx, Arc Energy, SunBorne and CleaResult. Bilal is passionate about student entrepreneurship and co-founded RoughDraft.vc, a venture firm focused on student startups, is a founding Board member of StartLabs.org, and co-founded the annual University Research and Entrepreneurship Symposium. Bilal was a co-founder of GEO2 Technologies, an advanced materials company that also spun out Bio2 Technologies, and was a strategy consultant with The Boston Consulting Group.
Bilal has a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (under Prof. Mario Molina – Nobel laureate, 1995) and his technical work has been published in peer-reviewed journals and 30+ patents & applications. He was also a visiting scientist at PNNL/DOE Labs.
Bilal grew up in a middle class family in Karachi, Pakistan. He dedicates considerable efforts towards the promotion of education (especially higher education). He was also a member of the core founding team of LUMS School of Science and Engineering and consulted to the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan.
